MM: Who is in your present configuration of the Deanna Bogart Band? The last time I saw you it was Kajun (Kelly) and Eric (Scott) so I guess it has been a while! Tell me a little about the players....
DB:
Mike Aubin - drums (berklee/towson schooled) a great all around musician - teacher/mentor
dan leonard - gtr (we call him thor) an amazing musician/teacher/writer
scott ambush - bass - our special guest for this gig. he’s still with spyro gyra after 15 years - nominated for two grammys this year. a longtime friend who produced “real time” with me. (the latest dbb cd). we go back to the root boy slim days.
MM: How's your daughter? How old is she now? How has her getting older affected your music, particularly in regard to your writing?
DB:
alix is 14 and a freshman in high school. she affects everything about me mostly because (besides how awesome she is and how much i like her as well as love and adore her) being a parent makes you want to be better then you were. so while striving to be a better parent, i strive to be a better person, writer, musician, listener........and still remember how important fun is.
MM: You get pigeonholed so much as a "blues" or "boogie-woogie" player, but I hear so much more in your music...how would you describe your music or influences, particularly in regard to your live show?
DB:
i describe what i do as “blusion”. it all grows out of the blues, just doesn’t always end there.
MM: You have spent a considerable amount of time performing on the Eastern Shore here...what, if any stand out, are your favorite memories of Easton, Saint Michaels, etc.? Someone told me you used to have some sort of regular residency or gig at Perry Cabin.....true?
| DB:
i have some wonderful memories from my days on tilghman island. spent alot of time playing harrisions - (oh those crab balls), the tilghman inn - both with my band and way back in the day, with bird dog and the road kings. i used to play at the old perry cabin. loved it. |

MM: What can you tell me about Matt Wigler, who, as you know, will be on the show? I know you have been very much involved in his young career....
DB:
i’ve been working with matt for around 2 years. i don’t typically “teach” younger people, but he’s one of those old musicians in a young body, so mentoring him has been easy and a joy. he’s an utter natural and i’m intrigued to see where his personal musical journey will take him...
MM: Are you listening to anyone currently who inspires you? Why? How?
DB:
glenn gould. damn.....ben webster. ahhh... prince live....yikes
MM: Do you prefer recording or playing live? Why?
DB:
i prefer both. i like to work and i like to play. although truth be told, if i could afford it i might hide in the studio forever....
MM: What are you working on for 2008?
DB:
music-wise i’d like to record a solo piano cd, a dbb cd, write a concerto and work on a book.
MM: At this point in your career, how would you like to continue to grow as an artist?
DB:
by continuing to educate myself in regards to theory, composition, writing skills, and by striving to broaden all horizons to keep my mind pondering, learning and excited by new adventures, knowledge and possibilities.
FILL IN THE BLANK
My New Year's Resolution will be to....
i make daily resolutions so....or is that hourly?.....
When I hear the term "boogie woogie" I think.....
a scene out of 1930’s kansas city - an old building out in the middle of nowhere, a piano,
a bunch of folks and a hell of a good time...
Sushi...."great meal" or "bait"?
a euphoric meal
Winter time makes me.....
want to make soup, buy snuggly sweatshirts and sit by the fireplace
The best part of being a parent is.....
there’s so many best parts (: |
