Garrison Starr Interview

Coffee East

December 5th, 2007

MM: The Basics....where are you from? I think I have read Mississippi, is that correct?

Garrison Starr: I am from hernando, mississippi, yes.

MM: Have you spent much time in Maryland? If so, do you have any fond memories of any specific areas here?

Garrison Starr: not a whole lot, actually. i have a great uncle who lives in silver spring, though, and honestly, for awhile i was convinced he was the dc sniper. i'm sure that's not all that funny, though. he did used to work for the cia, and he invented a bomb called the "starrtac". his name is leland starr. the family knows him as "uncle twink".

MM: You are often described and noticed for yor songwriting....are you a "lyrics first" person or a "tunes first" person...

Garrison Starr: it can go either way.

MM:  So often, when we promote acts, particularly ones who aren't household names, they get the "sounds like..." label....you seem to get Neko Case a lot, Melissa Etheridge some, Sheryl Crow some.....what should people know about you and your music that is personal to you and a reason to see YOU?

Garrison Starr: i really don't sound like anybody else. i'm very real. and i don't take myself all that seriously. i consider that to be a good thing.

MM: What is the recording process like for you now in 2008? What the pros and cons of making music in the MP3 world...?

Garrison Starr: hmmm. i mean, at this point, if it's not enjoyable, i'm not doing it. the pros totally outweigh the cons in my eyes in terms of digital recording. there's no waiting for the rollback of that two inch tape, for one thing. i think it's all relative. i enjoy the immediacy of the world we live in now in terms of the digital technology. i'm all for expediting the recording process. and to me, it sounds just as good as tape. i think one of the up-sides to the age we're living in is that artists are able to be more self-sufficient. it's really every man's game. there's nothing a person can't do in this world. though a down-side as well is that we have to catch up with ourselves. in terms of music online, the boundaries are still being created and policed. it's unclear. the kids in the next generation are becoming accustomed to getting a lot of music and entertainment for free... this is a dangerous precedent to set i think. there's nowhere to go from there. i'll be interested to see how the "powers that be" work it all out. better somebody else than me. ha!

MM: You are co-billing ith Julian Velard. Have you played with him before...? Why should people come see him...

Garrison Starr: i have played one show with Julian at the tin angel a month or so ago. he's got a great sense of humor.
